“In 1971, virtuoso cartoonist Jack Kirby took note of the growing power of fundamentalist religion in the U.S., and satirized it in an issue of ‘Forever People.’ Kirby was one of the 1st to notice elements of fascism in the mega-media religion which emerged in the late 1960’s.”
Paintings from artist Scott Listfield’s recent exhibition “Franchise,” which was on display last month at Gallery 1988 in Los Angeles, California. The brilliant series depicts the iconic signage of fast food institutions (as well as sly references to “Bob’s Burgers,” “Star Wars,” and Netflix’s “Stranger Things” among others) being rediscovered by Listfield’s ever-wandering astronaut in a distant, dystopian future.
Welcome everyone to the weird and wonderful world of hand-painted movie posters. When videocassettes reached Ghana (West Africa) in the early 80s, mobile cinema operators began to set up TVs and VCRs in neighborhoods and screened the latest videos from America and elsewhere. The movie posters they used are amazing (hand painted on flour sacks!) and here are some of them. Writer/director Walter Hill nailed it dead-on when he said, “To be brutally honest, many of these posters are more interesting than the films.”
